A collection of non-fiction short stories.
Trueque is the practice of bartering in Argentina. In 2000 and 2001, as the peso became harder and harder to come by, bartering clubs offered an increasing alternative for Argentines to put food on the table and take care of basic clothing and miscellaneous needs. These stories depict the Argentina of 2000 and 2001 and are based on our experiences as regular participants in bartering clubs.

The Owl Lady
The owl lady
makes jam
plum
orange
kumquat
and squash
to sell.
Makes bread
with chicharrones
and without.
Canelones
once a month.
And she likes to
bring a plant or two
from her garden
to sell
at el trueque.
Her red glasses center unblinking eyes
under the even wrinkles
across her forehead.
She wears a man's
gray jacket
from three presidents back,
and in quiet,
uses plumed fingers
to float and direct
her bit of world.
Where owls,
and not iron bars
nor locks,
protect the night.
