Bookbinding and Ecology Day

August 23, 2005

Luis Volkman (Biologist), Alex y Magu Appella (Bookbinders)

Helping Luis draw a food chain
Padre Liqueno School, built in 1930 on top of the high sierras, 14 kms from the highway--just about in the middle of no where.
The subject of the day was insects, and when asked to draw what they most saw, scorpions were a regular choice.
Sharon with her book, and her scorpion. Jonathan looking on.
The church at the school.
Marcos and Luis creating the food chain with the kids, who then reproduced it in their (self-bound) insect guides.
The kids live at the school during the week, and go home on the weekend. Although there are some orphans who live there all year.
A surprise snow storm caught us on the way in. (Thank goodness the national park guard took us in and we didn't have to subject the Peugot to the storm!)
Working on his insect guide.
After making books, who doesn't want to dance?
Magu accompanying the dancing kids.
Marcos brought music as well. You can see 3 of the teachers in the top right corner. They live up at the school as well, only going home every 15 days for the weekend.
Luis Volkman, Magu y Alex. All of this is made possible by a project that Luis wrote and got funding for.
