Flat Back Binding-for
elegant, acid-free books.
This hard-back binding style works best for books up to 100 sheets/200 pages.
Involves formatting the text into folded sections (read more below).
Text printed on both sides of the sheets.
The book block is sewn onto tapes, the spine reinforced, and then attached
to the cover.
Title and/or images can be inlaid or printed on the cover.
Spine Canvas: Choose from black, slate gray, brown, butterscotch, light
camel tan, cherry red, periwinkle blue, navy blue, kelly green, burgundy,
moss green. More colors available, just ask.
Cover Paper: Choose from just about any color imaginable. If you want
a title printed directly onto the cover (as opposed to inlaid), you should
think about choosing a lighter color paper.
Ribbon Page Markers optional.
Page Paper: We have a variety of papers available for the pages. Our
standards are white or cream/off white, 90 gm, no texture. However, feel free
to consult other weights and textures. Deckled (hand-torn) foredges are also
an option. See below.

The Flat Back Binding Process
An abbreviated overview.
(The
above photo is a particularly colorful book block already sewn together, but
not
yet attached to the covers of the book.)
The sections are first sewn together over linen tapes.
In the above photo the linen tapes can be seen crossing the spine.
The stitches can be seen running across the linen tapes, and in the chaining
at the head and tail of the book block.
The stitches run pristinely up and down the spine, through the sections, over
the tapes.
Once the book block is sewn, the spine is reinforced with Japanese Paper and
mull (binding gauze), before being attached securely to the hard-back cover.
Formatting
and Printing the Content:

The book block (the pages of the book) is made up of
folded sections.
Each folded section has 3 to 6
sheets of paper, folded in half.
Each folded sheet of paper is 4
pages of the book.
--If you are not familiar with desktop publishing, but you are interested
in this binding style,
we can format and print your content for you appropriately so that it can
be folded and bound in sections.
--If you are familiar with desktop publishing, and can format your content
in the appropriate sections
(or booklets as some programs call them), all we would need to do
is let you know our specs for binding pre-formatted and pre-printed material
(margins, number of pages in each section/booklet, etc).

2a. Variation
of the Flat Back Binding: Hard-back Pamphlet Binding
Pictured
below are examples of a variation on the Flat Back Binding, called Hard-back
Pamphlet Binding.
This is a binding option for books with just one or two sewn sections; that
is, books with few pages (i.e. 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 or 24 pages).
(Book in above left photo written by Curtis & Nettie
Atkisson, illustrated by Jeanne Bilson.)
2b. Variation
of the Flat Back Binding: Reinforced Loose Sheet Binding
The Reinforced Loose Sheet Binding looks exactly like
the Flat Back Binding but the binding work underneath
(not seen) is different. We do not need to do special formatting into sections.
In the Reinforced Loose Sheet Binding,
the pages are loose leaf, and bound using reinforced glue and string. It is
a durable binding, but the craftsmanship is less involved and the pages do
not lie as flat when opened as the Flat Back Binding. This binding format
is not recommended for Children's Books, nor does it work well for book blocks
that are more than a half inch thick.
